| Bitting: | The manner in which the cylinder pins are organized in sequence and in relationship to the cut of the key. See Fig. 4. |

| Cam: | The part of the cylinder that activates the locking or unlocking of the lock. See Fig. 8 |
| Cylinder Rings: | A decorative and functional ring in which the cylinder is seated. |
| Control Key | The key that retracts the core from a removable core cylinder. |
| Follower: | A tool which is used to keep the pins in the cylinder shell or housing, once the plug is removed. |
| Hi-Security: | A special cutting of the key, in which the records of the bitting and keyway sections are protected by the lock manufacturer, making duplication of the key very difficult. |
| Key Bow: | The large end of the key. |
| Keyed Alike: | Two or more cylinders or locks that operate with the same key. |
| Master Key: | A single key which operates a group of cylinders that are keyed different. |
| Mortise Cylinder: | A threaded cylinder that operates a mortise lock. |
| Pins: | A part of the cylinder that corresponds to the cut of the key. See Fig. 4. |
| Plug: | The center portion of a cylinder which is rotated by the key. See Fig. 1. |
| Removable Core Cylinder: | Cylinder in which the core can be extracted quickly with the use of a control key without removing the lock from the door. |
| Rim Cylinder: | A type of cylinder that is used with exit devices or auxiliary locks. A tailpiece from the back of the cylinder operates the lock. |
| Restricted Key Section: | A rare keyway which is hard to purchase and makes duplication of a key difficult. |
| Shell: | The part of the cylinder which holds the cylinder plug or core. See Fig. 3. |
